Recal Microbials

Improving Your Bottom Line

How It Works

It’s Different!

Recal is a patent pending product developed over a 20 year period. RECAL was originally started by a farmer from Indiana. Through on farm testing and the combined efforts of one of the top microbiologists and one of the top dairy veterinarians in this field, the RECAL product has become what it is today. It is a unique combination of various strains of beneficial bacteria, enzymes, and a specific type of concentrated yeast culture. It was designed to establish and rapidly expand a superior rumen population heavily weighted toward fiber digestion. The introduction of extremely large numbers of desirable bacteria appears to have the ability to overcome and replace less productive and harmful strains of bacteria. The continual re-establishment of these bacterial colonies in the rumen and on the intestinal villi may limit stress on the immune system by limiting growth and possibly blocking invasion of salmonella, e-coli, and other harmful bacteria. This daily recolonization limits both the frequency and severity of stomach upsets, but more importantly it should improve fiber utilization and in doing so, help to limit negative energy balance.

Vitamin Supplementation

While the above paragraph explains what probably occurs in the digestive tract, it does not adequately explain the dramatic effect this product appears to have on sick or severely stressed animals. This effect is rapid (less than 24 hours), and highly visible (appearance, appetite, and production).

It has been a well known and a well accepted fact in ruminant nutrition that the rumen bacteria in a healthy rumen will provide all the B-vitamins that a cow will need. It also has been well established that supplemental B-vitamins that are fed to ruminants are largely destroyed by the bacteria before they can be utilized by the cow because the bacteria use them as a food source. Thus B-vitamin supplementation has been important in both swine and chicken nutrition but largely ignored in ruminant nutrition.

Improves Immune Function

Certain strains of bacteria are used to produce various B-vitamins in fermentation vats for both human and animal use. These same bacteria if grown in the animal’s stomach can give us a dramatic increase in certain B-vitamins. Vitamin B-12 is one of the vitamins we have based our bacterial selection on. Injectable B-12 is used throughout the world as an appetite stimulant and as a way to improve immune function. This, to a large extent, explains why the largest response appears to be in the animals under the most stress, heat, calving, disease, mud, etc.

The difference between the RECAL Bolus and RECAL PLUS is the total numbers of colony forming units (cfu’s) of the different bacteria. The numbers are set so as to totally overwhelm any other population that might be present.
